The Totally True Sticker Origin Story
We all know what stickers are, but not everyone knows the secret origin of how they came to be. While Wikipedia and other internet sites regurgitate the tired trope of the Avery family tinkering to solve a common problem through the power of science, we've been fortunate enough to become privy to the far less romantic reality of the situation.
The year was 1803. Mild-mannered accountant Franklin J. Adhesive went about his daily routine as usual, working for a Midwest mining company.
After a chance encounter with a radioactive glue fly exposed to a nearby uranium deposit, Franklin gained the oddly specific ability to secrete a natural adhesive that he quickly fumbled by gluing his hands to the sides of his head. Below is an artist's rendering of the event.
Following that catastrophe, he took to labeling his various ledgers by adding adhesive to handwritten paper squares and his new power quickly became a monumental discovery. Sadly, power hungry corporations had already gotten wind of his abilities and swindled him out of the patent on labels and, as they would come to be known, stickers in their most primitive form. Now lost to the unrelenting passage of time, Franklin remains the unsung hero of our industry and an American legend.
Why We Celebrate
In 2015, a promotional sticker company founded National Sticker Day. We celebrate this observance because our days are joyfully filled with printing, cutting, counting, stacking, shipping, and sticking. National Sticker Day is the one day of the year when our skills become otherworldly, and our team can achieve feats long thought impossible. It's also a day we tip our hat to the legendary Franklin and thank him for all he did.
National Sticker Day: 5 Ways to Celebrate
While stickers are a limited commodity, celebratory ideas for them are not! If you need inspirational ideas, here are five suggestions to get in on the action this National Sticker Day.
Create Custom Stickers
While you can purchase stickers at a local retail store, it’s better to create personalized stickers that exemplify a tailored message or a captivating image. The good news is that hundreds of online resources can help you create customizable stickers.

Organize a Sticker Search Activity
Think of this as a typical scavenger hunt activity but with stickers. With National Sticker Day, there’s no limit on how to organize a scavenger activity. You’ll need friends or family members to get in on the action. Get creative by hiding stickers around several locations. Some can be easy-to-find places, while others can be more challenging. Make sure to leave various clues in selected spots that will help direct participants to their next destination.
Host a Sticker Contest
Hosting a contest is another creative way to observe National Sticker Day in 2024. Here are some suggestions for competitions or awards:
- Offer awards based on the most colorful stickers.
- Encourage participants to upload custom-made stickers to their social media pages.
- Reward participants who create the most original stickers.
- Offer a small cash prize as a reward. The winner can use this money to buy more stickers.
Host a Sticker Exchange with Students
If you’re a teacher, involve your students in sticker festivities by hosting a sticker exchange. Have everyone bring their favorite stickers and exchange them with their peers. You can also ask each student to briefly state why they selected their stickers—just before they say goodbye to them forever. Maybe you should actually have them bring in their sixth-favorite sticker or something.
Give Stickers as Gifts
The simplest way to get in on the annual celebration is to give someone stickers as a gift. This can be your co-workers, neighbors, or family members. There’s no need for competition, rewards, or custom-made labels. A small gesture in the form of a sticker will go far in making someone’s day.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, Die Cut Stickers will be hanging out on social media ALL DAY, giving away free Sample Packs and 10 free orders (maybe more) of our insanely custom stickers. To get in on the action, follow us, leave a comment, and share your favorite sticker content.
